Description

This version retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, but illustrator Frank Dobias represents the characters in a bold, art deco style. Black Mumbo appears as a kercheifed Mammy, while Dobias draws Black Jumbo as a straw-hat wearing, pipe smoking minstrel figure. All of the characters have dark black skin, prominent red lips, and white eyes, characteristics typical of the minstrelsy tradition.
