Description
Curiously, R.A. Burley’s illustrations are distinctive for this adaptation from the late 1930s as Sambo and his parents are not drawn with any gross caricature or racist tropes. Rather, they are illustrated as African Americans in a realistic fashion, including a well-furnished house with a fireplace and even a family dog. This version by the Samuel Gabriel Sons & Company is printed on Linenette, and though there are pages with lush and vibrant colors, the majority of the illustrations feature a red, grey, brown, and white color scheme that feels a bit washed out.
