Description
This 2019 Kindle Amazon Edition reprints Florence White Williams’ 1928 version of Little Black Sambo, originally published by Saalfield Publishing Co. Interestingly, this contemporary version does not alter any of William’s negative racial representations. For instance, Black Mumbo still appears as a Mammy, while Black Jumbo is represented as a barefoot, pipe smoking minstrel figure. Little Black Sambo is variously shown wearing a primitive, African-esque grass skirt, overalls that evoke the American plantation, and his fine clothing. A monkey appears in the foreground of one illustration, further compounding this conflation of African and African American stereotypes.
