Description

This adaptation retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, though it renames Little Black Sambo as Little Brave Sambo. (Interestingly, the parents remain Black Mumbo and Black Jumbo.) The illustrations recast the characters as explicitly Indian. Black Jumbo wears a turban, and Black Mumbo wears a long, stereotypical Orientalized headscarf. Additionally, the unattributed illustrator depicts Little Brave Sambo as curiously feminized, with rosy cheeks, long eyelashes, and a seemingly lipsticked mouth. Another oddity with this adaptation is that Sambo’s skin tone is rarely consistent in color.
