Description

Suzanne Hesselbarth’s adaptation features a distinctly Indian and slightly abridged version of Helen Bannerman’s text. Unlike other versions that ‘Orientalize’ Sambo and his parents, Hesselbarth’s version illustrates them realistically. However, she retains their original problematic names. Another issue is that the family is not seen living in any type of house. Rather, the family eats their pancakes on a blanket outside and the scene where Mumbo cooks their meal is curiously absent.
