Description
This adaptation retains Bannerman’s original text, but the lurid pink and black illustrations portray Little Black Sambo as an absurdly dark-skinned, earring-wearing African caricature. Black Mumbo also appears as an overweight, head-scarf-wearing Mammy figure. Black Jumbo does not make an illustrated appearance alongisde the rest of his family for some reason. Like some other adaptations that set Sambo’s story in Africa, the apperance of a monkey that curiously watches Sambo and his misadventures is present.
This collected edition also contains Hansel and Gretel, Peter Rabbit, The Scare Crow and the Tin Man, and Rumpelstiltzkin.
