Description

This adaptation retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, but it also reprints illustrations from the earlier 1943 collection Five Favorite Stories, also published by American Crayon Co. However, this version recolors the illustrations, alternating between a lurid black and blue color scheme and greens and yellows. Like the previous iteration, these illustrations portray Little Black Sambo as an absurdly dark-skinned, earring-wearing African caricature. Black Mumbo also appears as an overweight, head-scarf-wearing Mammy figure.

This collected edition also contains 29 classic children’s fairy tales and stories, including Cinderella, The Gingerbread Boy, and Hansel and Gretel among others.
