Description

This version largely retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, but it alters the opening lines to state: “Once upon a time a little boy lived in India, and his name was Little Black Sambo. And his mother was called Mama Sari. And his father was called Papa Simbu” (68).

Additionally, this adaptation reprints illustrations created by Eulalie and originally published in circa 1925 by the same publishing company. However, this version recolors Eulalie’s illustrations, using a largely green, black, and white color scheme. Additionally, this adaptation revises Eulalie’s original renditions of Little Black Sambo’s parents as African Americans, portraying Mama Sari instead as a much slimmer Indian woman with her hair pulled into a bun rather than concealed beneath a Mammy-ish headscarf.
