Description
This reprint includes Helen Bannerman’s original text and illustrations, but it does not mention the author anywhere.
Interestingly, the preface includes a justification from “The Publisher” defending the company’s decision to reprint the book. The unnamed publisher acknowledges, “During the last thirty years, the book and its little hero have become the center of a big controversy. Sambo became, to some, a symbol of racism, and to others, he remained a long-remembered favorite” (5). On the following page, the publisher describes their own young sons’ positive reception of the book and claims that “we are reissuing the book as a window to our past” (6).
