Description
This version retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, but it reprints illustrations created by Eulalie (unattributed in this edition) and published in circa 1925 by the same publishing company. Eulalie redraws the characters as distinctly African American. Her illustrations of Little Black Sambo are largely inoffensive, though she does represent Black Mumbo as an obese, headscarved Mammy caricature.
This edition incorporates both color and black and white illustrations. Some illustrations are colored differently than in other Eulalie editions.
This collected edition also includes “The First Circus”, “The Little Red Hen and the Grain of Wheat”, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” and “The Rooster, the Mouse, and the Little Red Hen”, among others.
