Description

This version retains Helen Bannerman’s original text, but illustrator Eulalie redraws the characters as distinctly African American. Her illustrations of Little Black Sambo are largely inoffensive, though she does represent Black Mumbo as an obese, head-scarved Mammy caricature.

The color illustrations in this version have the same coloring as the 1925 version published in The Story of Little Black Sambo in The Gateway to Storyland (Star Edition).

This collected edition also includes the short stories “Little Red Hen,” “Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “Three Little Pigs,” “Gingerbread Boy,” “Chicken Little,” and “Three Little Kittens” among others.
