Description

This adaption largely retains Bannerman’s original text, but the opening sentence identifies the protagonist as “a small boy” rather than the original description of “a little black boy.” Additionally, illustrator Violet LaMont represents the characters as explicitly Indian. Black Mumbo wears a headscarf, while Black Jumbo wears a turban. Finally, monkeys and macaws appear in the background of many of the illustrations, further reinforcing the text’s Orientalized rendering.

The title page of the Baldwin edition contains the following paratextual inscription: “To Michele from Isabel Rahm. Because you like pancakes!”
