Little Black Sambo in Chimney Corner Stories

Source

University of Florida’s Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature

Baldwin Call #39h3393

Description

This adaptation largely retains Bannerman’s original text, though the opening line describes Little Black Sambo as merely a “little boy,” rather than Bannerman’s “little black boy.” Additionally, illustrator Lois Lenski represents the characters as distinctly African American caricatures, despite the story’s ambiguous setting amidst palm trees. Black Mumbo appears as a Mammy figure, and all of the characters have curly hair, bulging eyes, and exaggerated mouths.
